Bear Jam presents Hibernation Film Festival 2020

Bear Jam Productions proudly presents The Hibernation Film Festival. A festival born out of the recent events that have unfolded across the globe. However, despite being confined to our homes, we are turning this pandemic on its head and want to celebrate filmmakers’ work from around the world. So, we have decided to not only “Do More Video,” but to host our very own online festival.

The theme for the festival is positivity, something we not only want to encourage throughout this time but we are keen to see through people’s creative films.

The Brief

Positivity will always see us through. Create a short film to show how it does.

It’s moments like this in which creativity can flourish and we want to challenge you – to come up with a film that you can create at home within your household. No camera? Grab your phone. No lighting? Grab a lamp. There really is no excuse, so what are you waiting for? It’s time to start rolling… as there will be plenty of exciting prizes to be had.

What are the categories?

The festival will include the following categories:


A short film that tells a fictional or fictionalised story

Animation / Stop Motion

A film that makes use of any number of animation techniques


A non-fiction film that in some way documents the current times


An experimental, alternative or abstract film

The Bear Jam team are working hard to secure some exciting prizes and we will keep you updated as these are confirmed. The current sponsors are:

Submission Eligibility

  1. You cannot not leave your house to shoot this film. (Please follow all guidance from the government during this time.)
  2. You can enter into more than one category with each film.
  3. 100 seconds is the maximum length for each film entered. This includes credits.
  4. All entries are to be created specifically for the film festival and should follow all submission guidelines.
  5. All foreign language films must be submitted with hardcoded English subtitles.
  6. All entries must be submitted by 11:59pm Thursday 16th April, 2020.

Selected films & winners

A shortlist will be selected by the Bear Jam team, which will then be put to our judges. No correspondence will be entered into regarding the selection process and the decisions of the Festival are final. We will be unable to offer individual feedback or enter into any discussion about your work. Successful submissions will be listed on our website, social media outlets and emailed.

Winners will be announced on Thursday, April 23rd 2020. The judges’ decision is final.

We will feature all shortlisted films (with credits) as well as the winners on our Bear Jam website.

Rights and permissions

Applicants are solely responsible for obtaining all necessary rights and permissions for third-party materials included in their films, including but not limited to music, trademarks, logos, copyrights, and other intellectual property rights. BJHF expressly disclaims all liability or responsibility for any violations of anything copyrighted.


For promotion of the entire selection and of each selected film, the festival website is allowed to use any photo or digital film clip (less than 3’ duration).


All participants will receive an email notifying them of the information regarding the online screening, along with links to everyone’s entries. On Thursday, 23rd April 2020, the judges will then announce online, via a conference call, who are the winners. Participants will receive a link via email to join.

Sam 1

Sam Collison

In 2008 Sam began a career in advertising, working for agencies such as RAPP, HeyHuman and Saatchi & Saatchi. Moving to Netflix in 2016 he has spent the past four years producing UK launch campaigns for original series and films, including: The Irishman, The Witcher, Top Boy, Black Mirror, The Crown and Stranger Things.

Turning his hand to pretty much anything in the promotional spectrum he’s scripted and produced social videos and radio ads, developed trailers for broadcast, commissioned artists for mural projects, written the odd line of copy, as well as art directing and producing out of home campaigns.

Dan Smith

Dan Smith is a BAFTA-winning TV director, producer and writer with a passion for storytelling. He has straddled many genres from music videos with Lethal-B to science documentaries with Stephen Hawking. Having worked for BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4, Discovery, Nat Geo, Sky, Google and recently Netflix he has a solid client base who keep returning.

Awards include a BAFTA for directing Attenborough’s Museum Alive, L.A. Reel Film Festival and Silver Scream fest for short film Flyspy. He has won a Wildscreen Panda, a Broadcast Digital Award, a D&AD Pencil, The Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and was nominated for the BAFTA – Breakthrough Talent Award as well as a Grierson.

Lucy Brydon

From Edinburgh, Lucy graduated from the University of Warwick with a BA in Creative Writing in 2005 before moving to Shanghai. She lived there until 2010, writing, directing, and producing short films, commercials and television dramas as well as learning Mandarin.

She then studied Film Directing at Columbia University’s MFA Programme in New York. Her short films have screened at numerous international festivals and her debut novel, Shanghai Passenger, was published by Blue Mark Books in 2015.

Lucy leads the Screenwriting course on the University of Warwick’s Creative Writing Programme, and is in development on a number of feature and television projects. Her debut feature film, Body of Water, premieres at the Glasgow Film Festival 2020.

James Hilditch

James is the Founder and Creative Director at Bear Jam and has built a reputation as a digital content Creative. 

James has worked on visual branded content across all the major digital platforms. He loves to generate ideas and nurture concepts and briefs through to delivery.  He is able to generate natural performances from all different types of talent from the England Rugby team to camera shy CEOs. James has worked across the UK and abroad and is comfortable directing his regular crews or local freelancers.
